Onuk Island, a Place Where My Soul Lives

Onuk is now my favorite island in the Philippines. One reason is that it has three magnificent views from its stilt nipa huts: the vivid orange sunset, the refreshing morning sunrise, and, my favorite — the low, bright moon hovering over the sparkling sea against a sky full of stars. In the last, we agreed that photos can never do justice, that the view was only ours to keep — a gift, forever etched in our memories.

After ihaw-ihaw dinner with new friends, we sat on the steps facing the moon, the sea breeze at just the right strength and temperature, as if we were gently welcomed to stay the night despite being on the open sea. I opened my Skyview app and we spotted constellations, Jupiter and Saturn from a little spot by the hut. With pale lager on hand, I blasted Toto, The Real Thing, and VST. I told my friend in her 50s that I’m an old soul, and we sang along. She said she lived in America for 13 years but returned because there’s nothing like home. I said she was right.

That night was simply perfect. One of the most perfect nights of my life.
